You probably know that it’s important to take your children to the dentist regularly to get checkups. What you may not know is exactly what your dentist is actually doing during those checkups and why they are so important.

The dentist will be looking at your kid’s teeth and gums to see if there are any problems that need to be dealt with and also checking if their teeth are developing properly as they grow. Most dental checkups, or exams, also include having your children’s teeth cleaned and flossed as well as checked for cavities.

A dental hygienist will likely perform a cleaning using special dental tools to remove plaque. While they are cleaning they will also take note of any sensitive areas in the mouth. Next, the hygienist will likely polish your teeth to make your smile look great.

Another part of a dental checkup is X-rays, which all the dentist to get a better look at what is going on under the enamel of the teeth. Even if your kid doesn’t have any tooth pain, an X-ray can treat potential problems before they become painful.

Your dentist will also take an old-fashioned look into your child’s mouth to see if they can determine any problems. They will also ask you and/or your kid questions about any pain or other symptoms they may be experiencing.

After the checkup is complete, your dentist will recommend a course of action personalized to your child so that their teeth and gums can be as healthy as possible. Depending on the condition of their teeth, this could be anything from one visit to multiple appointments.
