When most parents think of orthodontics, they picture braces and straight teeth — but palatal expansion for airway and tonsil reduction in children is quickly becoming one of the most impactful treatments in pediatric health care. Why Are Adenoids and Tonsils a Big Deal?
Enlarged adenoids and tonsils — also called adenotonsillar hypertrophy — can block a child’s airway and contribute to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).
This ranges from mild snoring to full-blown obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is linked to poor school performance, behavior problems, and even heart issues.
The usual solution? Surgery. But what if orthodontic care could help?
What the Study Found
A 2022 study published in Sleep Medicine followed 60 children aged 5 to 15, comparing those who received RPE with those who did not. The results were remarkable:

- 90% of kids who got RPE had a reduction in adenoid size

- On average, tonsils shrank by 38.5% and adenoids by 16.8%

How Does Palatal Expansion Help the Airway?
RPE widens the upper jaw using a small orthodontic appliance. This:

- Reduces inflammation in the lymphatic tissues (like adenoids and tonsils)
